Ideas for a suitable speedo drive on a 2wd syncro?

Post by windy »

Due to my syncro not having a front diff (missing when I bought the van 5yrs ago), I have nowhere to drive a mechanical speedo from.

I used to use an electronic speedo, getting a signal from magnets placed on the redundant drive flange on the original syncro box, but now I have a 2wd gearbox fitted this is not possible either.

Ideally I'd like to reinstate a mechanical speedo but can't think of a way to drive it in the usual 2wd way from the front hub, as the syncro ones aren't hollow.

Anyone have any ideas on the matter? Failing that I suppose I could pick up a signal for the electronic speedo from one of the driveshafts?

Why don't you ring Ultimate Engineering and use the speed sensor and toothed ring that fits on the rear output shaft that he uses for speed input on electronic power steering.

What about a GPS speedo? I looked at them a while back as mine is in KMH, I bought a sat nav instead and use that when I do long runs.

Where near Shrewsbury are you, we are 'near' Telford 8)

GPS speedo looks an easy option.

Jim, I'm roughly half way between Shrewsbury & Oswestry on one of the hills

I know the road well, we travel that way often. Havn't been to the Chinese at Nescliffe in a while though

I walked the dog down to the Three Pigeons yesterday, and the Chinese looked like it had closed down. Could well have been closed quite a while, as I don't get down there very often these days.
I see dozens of T25's travelling down the bypass from Shrewsbury to Oswestry in the summer, but virtually none in the winter.

Had one of our first dates in the 3 pidgeons, the food used to be lovely. Nice beer, should go again.

We've been up and down the A5 a fair bit recently, but your right, not many out come the winter months (just fitting a heater in mine so should make life a ot toastier).
