Another Tappet/hydraulic cam follower issue/question.

Post by Mohamster »

Hello hello,

I'm doing a top end rebuild/refurb of my engine (1.9 DG). While inspecting the hydraulic cam followers I found four of them (on both sides of the engine) them had chips in the rim that forms part of the spring clip groove. Based on this damage (see pics in dropbox link) I decided to buy new cam followers.  at my lack of research into replacement of cam followers.

Fast forward to today and I'm researching another valvetrain issue and I find that the advice is not to replace flat hydraulic cam followers without replacing the cam because the new followers will excessively wear the old cam lobes.

My engine is back in the van and I'm in no position to take it out again and replace the cam neither financially or time-wise. Given the damage on the old cam followers, do I just proceed with the new ones or do I take them out and put the old ones in?

Stuck between a reciprocating cam and a hard place :( Help!!

أنا لا تساعد مع هذا ولكن سخان الهواء الخاص بك يتم الانتهاء منه - أنا فقط بحاجة طول العادم

You aren't having much luck at present are you, if you let me know what length is needed I will pack it up so that it is ready whenever you get fixed up enough to be able to start on something else.

Not much choice if lifters are broken, thats best practice but we don't always have the option.

Personally I'd just replace the broken ones, I would fit telescopic push rod tubes.

Hmmm ... so some of the old HCFs are showing signs of wear do they would be likely to chip ... I could select the best of the lot mayeb 2 or 3 of the old ones.

In the meantime need to buy.some really good reassembly grease. Hadn't paid attention to the Zinc diphosphate content of the stuff I had. Wondering also about break-in engine oil. Halfords tends to be the first port of call but you gotta know what you're looking for there

chips are where the pushrod has been resting onto the rim perhaps becauae it was run with drained tappets and jumped up there or perhaps it was badly assembled before.

doubt halfords will have it

Thanks for the Miller tip. After some convoluted calls to suppliers I went direct to Miller who directed me to OP Oils

Just ordered the following

Millers Assembly Lube

Loads of discount codes to be had here

Personally I-m not sure what benefit running in oil is, it's not a high performance engine and you need to change lots which you are more likely to do if it's cheap mineral oil, maybe do the first 50 mile change with cheap oil + lead replacement addative then stick this in for the next longer stint.

Happy to have views on this for my engine.
