Rat a tat tat

Post by blurb55 »

Ok westy not fired up since the trip out to the Duke.

Started it up to the sound of a loud rat a tat tat the cadence of which is in sync with the revs and it is loud - now I know this could be a number of things.

After crawling under the van, the sound is coming from the offside cylinder head so could it be tappits.

Van is a 2.1 pertol.

And most importantly can I drive it 50 miles to get it serviced without knackering the engine?

Any advice appreciated. Cheers, Paul.

Mine does the same when it's not been run for a while. I've seen a thread that says it could be the hydraulic tappets and that a good 10 mile run will sort it out. If my van is used regularly the 'tap tap' is not there and she's as quiet as a mute mouse.
I don't think it's a serious problem, but what would I know :?

Thanks fella, will go for a small pootle about - looking at your avatar the van looks familiar - were you over our way just after Xmas, kept seeing one like that but cannot remember exactly where. We would have been trundling about in a blue Syncro Velle.

Ta for the advice, went for a pootle round the valley and with exception of doscovering the tax is due (hence the short trip!!) the machine gun stopped firing, so once taxed it's off for a full fettle.

Mine does that when it's been parked up for a while.
particularly if parked on a slope.
I read somewhere about whether mineral oil or synthetic is best to stop it but I cant remember which one was best :?
Tappets I reckon.

No worries blurb. Not been in the valley in me van at all, ever! Only got it in October. Been to Buxton a few times and just generally around Whaley area. Will be frequenting the car boot at Hope every Sunday when they start. Will go over in the van to give it a run so it don't start rat a tat tat  Maybe see around then? Thinking of going to Dubfreeze for the day if work allows (bliddy quarry), maybe see you there :?:
