life of a 1.6 TD engine?

Post by lloyd »

Looking at a 90 westy TD joker with 125k on the clock and wondering what the life expectancy of engine is??? Anything other then the usual stuff that I should check on this model?

Thanks,

Lloyd

errr. month or two  it's on borrowed time already, is my guess

my TD has 180 000 km, and the second engine isn't new :(

but search this site, or the wiki...if it's got good bodywork, worry not for the life left in the motor. to swap an engine is a lot easier & cheaper than welding & paint

they are cheap to find in passats, skodas, etc, and the gearbox, sump, pickup, etc is all there to make a good swap to a better TD, a TDi or even GTi, apparently. search the engine swap shop part of this site :D

thanks chad

I've looked at the Wiki.. Good bible!! I'm hoping it's 125k kilometer and not miles as clock is geman. Other gurus say if it's 125K miles, it's probably not original engine.

Thanks,

Lloyd

if it's on 125km, it's due a new engine
if it's on 125miles, it maybe a world record

Really?

I thought these engines were all but indistructable? Mine has 134K miles on the clock with original engine. Non turbo mind you. and the engine is as new inside. No idication of a stepped bore or anything - I know as I have been doing the head gasket this week as have a few others funny enough.

Might be wrong but thats what I always thought.

Thanks for the input. Guess all I can do is go try it out and see how it runns and feels. And if we buy it, hope it holds together.

Depends how it`s spent its life I wouls say. Properly maintained, not allowed to overheat due to neglected servicing and coolant changes or blocked rads. is the main thing. Trying to do 80MPH everywhere doesn`t help the cause either.
Keep it real.

its a small engine for a heavy camper!

Its got to be down to how its been driven...which is impossible to find out.

How about a 2.1i instead?

Thanks for all the replys guys!

Don't think I'll be getting this camper now. I am having a hard time deciding what engine is best. The 1.6TD/1.9 are minimum and a 2.1 would be nice. Economy is best with a petrol/gas conversion I think. My partner has strength problems so power steering would be nice as we plan to use it as a daily driver as well.

I appreciate all your comments. Keep them coming!
