Engine Mounts Bus `83 DG 1.9

Post by Worleyboy »

Does anybody have experience changing the rear engine mounts, inner and outer? Haynes has one little paragraph, sounds dead easy. But I`m susspicious, could it be a knucklebuster. I tried to read in the arkives but litteral clarity is often conspicuous by it`s absence.
Haynes..." loosen nuts and bolts from mount. Raise engine, remove mount, fit new mount, lower engine, tighten nuts and bolts". Job done, or what?

Its 'fairly' straightforward but you'll find you won't be able to fully tighten mounts until the studs on the mounts have been poked through or it won't line up. You'll find it easier with pulley removed and you'll need a small socket and flexible joint to get to at least one of the inner mount nuts.

Also, mark everything (including crossbar) so it goes back facing the correct way.

Many thanks for your time and experience CovKid.I have a more realistic picture now. From what you say I presume that I have to remove the cross bar engine bearer and the belt pully to do the job. I havn`t removed the pully on this motor but I seem to remember that on the air cooled it was split for shim washers?
Haynes sayes it could be tight. Any tricks for getting it loose?

I changed mine last month. Mine is a water-cooled DG1.9 1990, so I don't know if yours is the same. I looked at removing the pulley wheel but it was too tight. Mine has an aluminium carrier between the cross-member and the engine. I found I could take this off from under the van whilst the engine is supported on a jack. It was a struggle but I did it.
Kenny.
I don't know where I am, but I'm having a lovely time!

Pully is easy if it's the standard one, just 60Nm
