If the fuel pump pushrod is worn, it could be touch and go for your pump. Very cheap fix. Use Brickwerks, I found a GSF version was too fat

Usual symptoms are random and sometimes VERY frustrating cutouts yes. Also if its been stood a week or more and the weather is hot it can be really hard to start as fuel left in carb can dry out and pump will take an age (if at all) to pull it from the tank.

Also, when the engine gets hot, the pushrod can start to stick in the plastic pedestal, So if you replace the rod and / or pump, make sure the rod is good and loose in the tube and the pedestal isn't too tight in the engine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-QDI74acLY

If you still have your original pump, it's likely that the rod will be worn by now, and the grease packed into the base of the pump will have pretty much disappeared.
