Diesel injection pump nosy

Post by schotte »

Hi,

I just got myself a 1.6 DT westfalia, and on my way back the slave cylinder started failing. (This i hope i can repair on the weekend) but wile looking for the problem, i had the engine running and i notice a metallic clicking or hammering nose. It seems to come from the injector pump, as when i hold the High pressure fuel pipes, the nose is not so audible. In addition i have notices a fuel like from the front side of the pump (not where the belt is) but don't really see where its coming from. the engine seems to be running fine, except that there may be a lot of partials coming out of the back (normal for an old diesel?) its when you ref the engine to about 3000-3500 rpm and then stop the throttle that the next time you throttle up a bit more black partials (not smoke) is coming out.
in the same incidence once the engine stops being reffed i can see some fuel drops. But it may be leaking the howl time as i seem to see more fuel under the car.

any idea? should i go to a specialist? if so anyone knows someone around Nottingham i could get to?

Lots of coulds and maybes but obviously without standing next to your van it's like throwing darts at a workshop manual

Rev most JXs hard and let off and they blow "pooh" out. It's character
Leak at front of pump? Quite common for rotor head O ring to go.
Metallic rattling from engine/pump 'could' be pump timing being too advanced. They do knock their breasticles off if so.

I've heard the metallic noise when there has been air in the system also, worth cracking the injectors open whilst it is running to see if bleeding them off helps. And as said above, timing may be out.

Thanks for that, the air seems like a possibility as with a leaking pump it could get air into the system, I think. How difficult is it to change the o-ring? Can I leave the rest of the pump as it is, or should I take the howl thing out?

So I went to a diesel specialist for the fule leak, and it leaked from somewhere the mechanic never seent it leak befor, it was from the small round seal around the shaft ( between the fore pipse to the injectors).
But the metallic noise is still there. How do I blead the injectors? Do I just loosen the pipes on the injectors, when the engine is running, and close it again when the fuel has come out? I don't see a manual fuel pump, as on older and other diesel engines.

is the clamp bolted onto the high pressure pipes? It has the plastic/rubber insert?

Yeah it was the rubber/ plastic seal that was starting to fail. As for the clamp, what do you mean?

I was talking about this clip on the pipes:

If it missing or the rubber/plastic insert is missing, then the pipes can Knock together.

Ahh ok, the clip is missing, so that may be the issue here. Thanks.
