Non VW.Van stereo
If I turn it up,at a certain point it cuts out.Any ideas what might be causing this?

Head Unit amp going in to 'protection mode as voltage drops and amps increase with volume.
Speaker going to ground (wires with stripes are negatives...opposite to what you would think)

quote="R0B"]Thanks Martin. The door speaker cables and speaker terminals are different sizes do I need to change the terminals on the wires around.[/quote]
if you have the wires on speakers round the wrong way they run out of phase, typically this wouldn't cause the issue your seeing, you would just hear it kinda like one speaker was lagging behind slightly, wouldn't sound as "crisp" if you get me
What head unit are we talking about? some want a direct to battery feed as many higher output ones can pull a lot of juice at higher volumes, that could cause an issue to show in some older wiring that may not have shown before, and what is the head unit driving? 2 speakers? 4? 6?

It's a Sony xplod 52wx4 head unit I have four speakers and a underseat sub unit.I turned the sub off to eliminate it.The unit is still cutting out.The stereo is connected directly to the battery.

Usually unsufficient power cable to stereo - depends how powerful it is

Re: Non VW.Van stereo
the wire size you will need will depend on a couple of things, 1 will be what battery you are attaching it to, if its the one in beside the engine then your going to need a thicker gauge as resistance increases with length, if its the one under your seat then you can go thinner,"assuming" its a 15 amp fuse that is on the stereo at then that gives you 13.8v x 15 = 207 watts drain, with that you would easily get away 12 gauge as a worst case scenario of attaching it to the battery in the engine bay, even then that would probably be overkill as you will Probably never pull a constant 207 watts as the 52x4 watt figure is peak and not RMS, Also check the Earth, no point in changing out the main supply with then having a nasty corroded wire connection on the earth.

Does it cut out as soon as you increase the volume, or xx seconds afterwards?
