firstly welcome to the club! a good resource for self build is the ... self build motorcaravaners club (google for website). storgage is the most valuble comodity, good bed and you'll need all the camper fitting! one way of doing it is to buy a caravan from a breakers or cheap of ebay, and use the bits in that to convert your van! other sites to google are magnum motor homes and marcle leisure, good suppliers of quility kit! enjoy the forums!

Haynes do a manual on van to camper conversions. Not read it myself, but I believe it covers all aspects of electrical, water system etc etc. Think Just Kampers flog it.
Keep it real.

electric system is quite easy, have everything you need on 12v, lights, tv and stereo etc, then a good leisure battery to run them from! a split charge system and a zig unit that will charge the battery/run your 12v stuff when hooked up! magnum have a really good zig style unit made by plug in systems, it distributes 12v and 240v all from one pannel and has a charger built in! i'm havving one of these in my new t4! somewhere else to look is the wiki, little hammer icon at the top of the page! plently of infor on campers.

for the water have a look at CAK tanks catologue (google) you can download it from their web site! it has everything you will need for a full hot and cold water system. also read up about propex and eberspacher heaters, go propex it's better!

personally i'd see if icould get a high top for it! don't know if you can but the people to ask would be dave and margret at timber technicians. they sorted mee and many others out! you could always get a roof rack and strap a trailer tent onto it for the kids! tho them all being under 7may not be too clever!

with a high top you could put the kids up there out of the way and then still have loads of room for you an the mrs! are you going to dubfreeze?? is a great opportunity to meet loads of people and ask all the questions, not to mention have a right good nosey around in other peoples vans!!

a good book to look at is the "how to convert you vw van or bus into a camper" pure van porn! lots of info and how to in there!
propex about £330, plus cost of gas and bottle, well worth it to keep very warm, ebberspacher about £1200 new or about £400 s./h, always cheaper on ebay through the summer!

www.gasure.co.uk ask for Steve, who posts on here

for all things gassy, on-board refillable system is neatest, fill up from autogas stations

Good luck with doing it well for a couple of grand :)
