Aircooled VW (beetle) help please

Post by porthyt »

Hey. A little Aircooled vw related advice please (for a beetle though). My bro has a 1300 beetle that he has just rebuilt the engine on. He was using it and it was ok for a couple of days and then it cut out when driving. After 10mins to cool down he can start it and drive back to normal until it heats up again (5mins later). He can start it when hot but it sounds like it has 1 cylinder and no power whatsoever. He is in Canada and it is 30degrees plus. Have changed the dizzy (thought maybe condenser), checked the fuel filter, checked carb diaphragm and the spark from the plugs. Any ideas?

Cheers Josh

Vapour lock is not uncommon on the bug, particularly when the metal fuel line over on the left is too close to the inlet manifold but it could be the coil breaking down when it gets hot. Had that a few times on bugs (worked on them for 20 years) - most likely cause. Make sure the tappets are set correctly.

Another thing that used to happen sometimes was the brown Bakerlite intermediate flange under fuel pump had hairline crack causing pump pushrod to be pinched and restricing fuel delivery.

or flexi hose under tank may not be routed properly, though I would expect that to be apparent
quite soon on driving
