Gearbox oil refill

Post by nobbyfox »

Have just completed a gearbox oil change on Dotty (JX engine)
It's a good job I am on the small side or there is no way I would of fitted underneath or have been able to get my hands in the smallest of places.
Thankfully the drain and refill plug were relatively easy to undo.
The refilling was made easier with this........

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00 ... UTF8&psc=1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Takes a litre at a time and it took about 5 mins of pumping to empty. The oil in a bucket of hot water to heat it up helped considerably :ok

Cheers Steve

PS The drain plug had the bare minimum of debris on the magnet. Not bad for a gearbox with 300Km on the clock

I changed mine at the weekend too. I jacked the rear up and put an axle stand under for better access.
I lost patience with my 1 litre pump. Perhaps should have warmed the oil. I used the garden hose and funnel method shown in the wiki. A bit like giving the bus an enema!
Anyway, happy with the knowledge that the gear oil is good for another few years and there were no gear teeth on the drain plug magnet.

I used the funnel method when I changed it a few years ago. Thought it was a bit of a faff.
Although the method I have just used was awkward too.
I need a garage with a two post lift !! :shock:
