Type 25 water cooled stalling when warm :-(

Post by Ian Cunningham »

Hi guys , I have an F reg 1900cc water cooled type 25 which I've had for many years ... It's been great but it developed an issue two or so years ago of what seems like petrol starvation! Every now and again it would stop and I'd have to take the fuel line of the carb and pump and suck the petrol through to get it going again ! It was like there was an air lock created in the tank . I've done the obvious, changing pump, rod and filter which seemed to help for a while. Now it has a different issue which seems related ?! It starts and runs perfectly on choke but them becomes lumpy and eventually stalls when warm !! I have had some good friends look at it who have had it on machines etc ... The co2 seems to be all over the place but the compression is fine apparently ! I had a spare carb that one guy swapped over for me but I can't remember if the fault appeared on both ! He said it needs a new carb but if it happened on both then surely it must be something else ??? There is a hole in the exhaust now which I'm sure doesn't help with the lack of back pressure ... Another job that I need to do :-( can anyone help as my poor van has sat helpless on my drive for two years ... She needs love !! Regards Ian

I would start with the obvious things - I see you have checked the filter (both? there is the cone one in the carb fuel inlet). Now check all your vacuum pipes to ensure they are not leaking - you wont believe the problems a perished pipe causes. Check all of them including the large pipe off the inlet manifold (left side when looking at the engine from the rear) which serves the brake servo. The pipe which goes out to the airbox can be blanked off at the carb end.
Next I would check to make sure the vac advance on the distributor is working - see this thread... https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=142696" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Lots of places for air to get in
Be methodical and test/check them all
Choke pull down unit diaphragm split
Distributor diaphragm
Brake servo hose perished
Vac lines
2nd throttle butterfly diaphragm split.
Gasket under carb
Gasket in between carb split
