How far?

Post by PeteandNikki »

So, referring to my post in another section. It sounds as if I have a rear wheel bearing giving up. It's not rumbling but stiff to turn and making a mild 'clicking' and rubbing noise. Any expert on here prepared to advise me how far it'll be safe to drive?

Have you checked for play in the bearing? If so how much?

Hardly any play what so ever. Have had to give up and call European AA again and get trailered to a garage!!
Now sitting in car compound awaiting hire car.

Can't fault the AA, but it's not a quick task to arrange a hire car to a remote town in the Loire valley late on a Saturday afternoon.

I've arranged for a full rear bearing re-build kit to be delivered for Tuesday in the hope that when the garage manages to dismantle on Monday that is what the problem is.

Without some decent facilities and tools I'm stuffed!!

You sure it's not the outer CV joint?

I suppose it could be the outer CV. Without some way of working on it I can't tell. I reached around and grabbed the drive shaft and gave it a good shake and there didn't appear to be any excess movement though.

I'm in the hands of the garage and can only hope they look at it first thing Monday in order for me to arrange parts as it's doubtful they will be willing or able to source locally if it's not the bits I've got organised already.
