2ND HAND ENGINE GAMBLE

Post by drjsmithwhite »

Hi All,

So I have took a punt on a 2nd hand engine, Supposedly been rebuilt but never fitted, I know it turns over but thats about it (No Proof of rebuild) Price was right so i took the gamble :)

Its a 1.9 DG and will be fitted to my 1983 panel (like for like swap)

What checks should i/Can i carry out whilst the engine is still out before i fit it to my van?

What items are worth replacing while this engine is out and whilst i remove my engine (Clutch? etc)

Any Links to a 'how to remove/replace engine' Guide would be good to.

Thanks for any input as always

This is how I did it this time...

What to replace is dependent on budget, I replaced my clutch when I first removed my engine several years ago but since then I just put the same one back because it has plenty of life ( had the engine or box off 5 times since then)
you can consider spigot bearing in the flywheel ( how to in wiki)
you should really check engine endfloat.

You could consider changing the crank oil seal.

rags in holes always, a single washer dropped in can ruin your engine.
