Hi jona,

I can't answer many of your questions apart from 1, we've got a 1Y on our high top and are really happy with it. Loads of torque and no hassle with turbo failures! We bought our bus with it fitted so don't know much about fitting. I do believe there is a wiki on this site for the conversion, have a look in there.

Cheers

Jona I think the 1y and aaz are very simular engines so you shouldn't have a lot of trouble except the aaz has a turbo and the gearbox should be ok if I am wrong I think someone will correct me

How on earth did you manage to wreck a 1Y in 3 weeks? What have you done to it?

Personally I would stay with replacing with another 1Y, no turbo to sort no complicated electrics, straight swap for what is there now. All I would suggest was to put a new oil pump in the next engine in case the current one is us. Mine came out of a 1998 Caddy.

They are very easy to swap out, just take bits off one and put on the other. 1Y is a pretty tough motor, just need to make sure it has oil and kept cool.
If you are looking for another engine I have one for sale at moment.

Can't make out anything with any certainty from those poor pics.(other than it's an engine! :) ) The engine no. isn't on the top of the engine anyway, it is on a flat surface, below no. 3 injector behind the oil breather pipe area, on the block.

Hi there that's where I've been looking but it's that badly worn I can't make anything out .the dipstick has been altered because where it is attached to engine block it has black sealant plastered around it .is there anything else I could look for?

Shouldn't be worn - rusty maybe. Give the flat area a going over with sandpaper/emery cloth until something appears. If it is a 1.9 that will be moulded into the block casting on the side under the exhaust manifold.

Hi jona the rocker cover looks like the 1y some of the tell tell sign when people do the convertion is they sometimes leave the alternator setup off the 1y which the alternator belt is ribbed and as thick as the cam belt and they maybe a spare place on the end of the crankshaft pulley where the power steering pump belt used to be but to be 100% sure you need to look where Oldiebut goodie said .

I can't see the dipstick in the photos but it looks like a 1y from what I can make out, and if you can get another I am pleased with mine.
