JX glow plug access

Post by mioba »

Hi All,

In the process of replacing the glow plugs on my bus.

I got 4new plugs yesterday from gsf - Bosch.

I have to far managed to replace 3 plugs. One nearest the back door and the 2 furthest away.

Now the one under the pump.

I have unscrewed the one under the pump. But it won't come out. The top of the plug hits the pump leaving still the nearly all the non metal parts of the plug in the engine. If you know what I mean. I have twisting and turning it every way to get some space but I can't figure this out.

I have noticed that the old plugs in my bus are Lucas and about 0.5 cm longer than the Bosch (at least the threaded bit on top). I think when I had a new head on my bus 2 years ago they used the old plugs then fitted the pump.

Now making it impossible to replica the plug.

I am thinking of putting the plug back in and hacksawing off the top to give the space to get it out. Hoping this will give the space to remove the Lucas plug and that the bosch one will then fit.

If this fails I will end up calling a mobile mechanic to remove the pump. But this will then mean having to retime the pump?

Thoughts and suggestions welcome

I would be tempted to screw it back in and then use a FBH and cold chisel and bend it or do it your way - anything to avoid removing the pump! It is tight enough getting that one out when you have the correct length one let alone one that is longer.

So an update.

I got a small hacksaw in there and cut off the top of the plug. It came out no problem.

The replacement bosch plug popped right in too.

Taking the old plugs out it hard but getting it all back together is just as hard, awkward and fiddly.

What a job overall.

Hopefully I won't be doing this job for a while.

Well done! That one by the pump is a right bar-steward.
