ways to refresh a 30 year old interior?

This evening I have mostly been stripping the interior furniture out of our Autohomes Kamper ahead of welding the sill back together.

This is what it looked like before I took it apart:



Before it goes back in, it will need some remedial action to fix some areas of water damage, and some of general wear and tear.

A lot of the melamine edging strip has come off, and whilst I know that new edging can be glued on, I am wondering if there is anything else that can be done to refresh or update the melamine?

Has anyone had any luck with painting melamine doors? if so, what sort of prep and primer would be good?

In some cases the wood is worn or chipped, so I will need to replace the section with new wood. Getting sheets of matching melamine is unlikely, hence my thinking about doing something else.

Are there other chipboard or plywood products in sheet form that are already laminated with a plastic or melamine coating?

Advice, ideas, pictures or what works or doesn't all very much appreciated.

Thats an interesting idea. I have used ESP for interior gloss prep without sanding, but hadn't occurred to try it on the formica.

I have a home made unit that was knocked up by the previous owner of my van, its a unit that contains the stove, sink and fridge in one but sits at the sliding door as its a westy multivan i have, its just in bare wood but i have bought 10 metres of grey fablon and grey 18mm edging strip to match the rest of the interior that way it looks factory from a glance, I am waiting on some switches that i am going to add into the unit that way i can switch the fridge off from 12v to 240v to save me digging around in the back of the unit as well as some accessories (dual USB Socket, Volt Meter) then i will be covering it so probably in the next few weeks.

The only limitation is your imagination.

I used Beetle headlining to cover my cupboards.

Our were painted red by previous we changed the flooring and painted cupboards blue.

We tried sticky backed plastic/fablon stuff[although it was cheap crap] but it faded within a year so got an offcut of vinyl from a flooring warehouse and used that instead

Some areas on ours were replaced with other wood, this panel and the top of the unit. The trim wasn't replaced on the top

Chucked a throw over the old seat covers, also made some blackout curtains and bunting
