Engine Reconditioning NE England

Post by Enternent »

Has anyone recently had an engine reconned in the North East, where they are happy with the service, not ripped off and not had their time wasted. I have adjusted the tappets as much as they will let me and they are still noisy and when turning the engine with no plugs in there is very tight spot so would like the engine given the once over (2 ltr Aircooled)

Tappets adjusted as much as they'll go and when turning eng over without plugs there's a tight spot. Now why should that be I wonder ? Just as a matter of curiousity have you thought of undoing 4 nuts to slide rocker shafts off and then turning engine over minus plugs when all valves will be seated and compression can escape via plughole. Just to see if tight spot still there. Yeah I know it's not going to be that but it's 5 min job.

Just a thought: How long has the engine run for after adjusting the tappets? You don't say how long you've owned the van. You've just joined so I am guessing (probs wrongly) that you just bought it. so... it can take 15 - 20 miles for the oil to build up in the hydraulic tappets so you will get tappet rattle for a while. If a van is stood for a while, sometimes a short while, you get tappet rattle until the pressure has built up. mine was a sod if stood for only a couple of days but was very quiet once it had been run. Just trying to help. Sorry I don't know of anywhere in North East to help you. Good luck and welcome.

Could you expand on the valve adjustment?

[quote="blacky"]Tappets adjusted as much as they'll go

What does that mean on an air cooled 2ltr or on any engine for that matter?

I was refering to his wording of ' tappets adjusted as much as they'll let me' and wondered if the tight spot turning engine could be a valve fouling a piston.

Yes I don't wish to seem patronizing but are you absolutely clear about the procedure. I was expecting to hear about tappet clearance with valves open etc. But I guess someone would have clarified that for you by now.
Good luck anyway

I wasn't expecting to hear about clearances as hydraulic lifters are fitted as standard.

I ended up using Engine Services in Dunston, Gateshead. They were down to earth, did a good job at reconning the heads and were very competitively priced. No complaints and I would recommend, they are at Dunston Rd, Gateshead NE11 9EE telephone 0191 460 5256

Forgot to mention when I took the engine to be reconditioned they discovered that the CU crankcase had a corner of it broken off and liquid metal or siliconed back on in its recent past. So I ended up having to source another short engine.
