Water pump pulley rattle

Post by Darkhorse »

Hi folks, just back from a pretty much problem free 2000 mile jaunt round Scotland in 1.9 wbx and have a low groaning sound emitting from the water pump pulley. Quite a lot of play in the pulley crank, I've had the belt off and run briefly so it's definitely the source. I guess I'll replace but wondering if the pump can be saved? I.e. New bearing / bush??
Also is a replacement something that needs to be done soon or is a little noise or play fairly common?

Cheers

Replace asap . Not worth risking it failing and cooking your engine.

WHS^^^^ it will go suddenly now, this is your early warning, don't ignore it.

don't even think about saving a couple of quid on brand, buy the best.
Last Brickwerks one was ok but I removed it and got a Meyle one from VWH which looked better made.
I had a gsf one last a year.

Don't over tighten the belt.

Yup, no repair possible. Replacement only and as said already, it WILL fail and usually suddenly. Covered in WIKI in depth and if its a 1.9DG note all the things I've said in WIKI. Will save you a bunch of problems in changing it.

1987 1.9DG. I didn't see a blanking plate on the pump currently fitted, I suspect it's not an oem part.
