gear box question

Post by ermie571 »

Hi all,

please could someone give a YES/NO answer to this question?

Will a gear box from an air cooled fit a water cooled 2.1 or 1.9 (we have both). We have the linkage too.

Have heard that the dk box is the strongest box they made, but the Aircooled has to go. I have a spare box, and I know where there is a set of linkages. Is it worth keeping as a spare for the w/c vans?

thanks

YES i have a DK 2ltr gearbox fitted to my 1.6td diesel. You need the dk linkage. keep your existing gear stick fitted in the later housing remove the screwed plate next to where the linkage pin connects to the gear stick. In relation to the 1.6td engine i changed the diesel bell housing and input shaft on to the dk box and needed to add an extra length aprox 43mm on the rod to the gearbox .The gearbox mounting that is on the dk box required an additional 43mm added to match up to the two screw holes in the chassis.I dont no about water cooled petrol but you may need to do some think like it.

Thanks Camper, that is exactly what I needed to know - that it can be done but nips and tucks and extensions and fiddling will be required!

Methinks it would probably be easier to get the original sorted...

cheers for the response

DK gearbox

Post by camper »

I was lucky in finding a DK gearbox with very little milage. It was worth the mods on the gear linkage and mounting. You may find its easier to get a good petrol box .The bell housing on the DK box i think fits straight on to a water cooled petrol if thats the case there is no need to mod the linkage.Diesel engine has a diffrent bell housing that puts the gearbox away from the engine aprox 43mm.

Airccoled linkages are different to the watercooleds..

think the Aircooled box is also shorter too.. but I could be wrong.

Yes the DK box is shorter and you need the linkage for that box and not the later one for water cooled.Thats why in lenght 43/5mm is added to its gearbox mounting to bolt up to fit.

thanks folks

I do have access to the linkage and I own the box, but nowt else (gear stick and other cab end gubbins - technical, aren't I)

so we could get it to work. is there anyone out there who would recommend keeping a DK as a spare for a watercooled. Think that I have heard that they are a stronger box?? Or when the original goes, get it re-built?

thanks all....

there might be a DK box in the for sales soon....anyone interested?

take care all
