Caravelle floor lining

Post by JonB »

How good is the original caravelle floor lining and does it hold water?

I'm just wondering whether it's best to patch up the original lining or to completely replace after removing a rear facing row of seats. Checking underneath the lining I'm also trying to work out if it's wet or has some wax oil under it.

Pretty sure that the carpet is synthetic, it will temporarily hold a bit of water but only if there is a persistant leak.
If you suspect water is laying under the carpet or rubber mats then lift the lot and find the cause.

The top layer is dense chip foam construction that will soak up water, it has a waterproof layer underneath but this also means if water does get under it will stay there and the metal floor will rust. Its good stuff so dont chuck it away, the gaps that are there for the seats can be filled in with strips of carpet or something. Make sure you treat any rust spots before you lay it back down and give the van floor a coat of wax to protect it.

Ace thanks, I was a bit surprised that the chipboard stuff would soak up water, that's why I wondered about replacing with some closed cell insulated stuff. Think I'll take out and dry it off and see where I stand with it. I really like the way it follows the grooves in the floors so if salvageable it would be my preference.

As to why it's wet, I'm assuming it's from the hole I recently did a temp fill on until it gets some major body work done in September.
