Crusty Window

Post by mrbodly »

Hi All

I've decided to tackle the crustiest of my rear windows, please see pics below. My van is a rolling resto and as an amateur I am tackling the repairs myself. To date, I have repaired a jacking point and lower panel and things have gone well.

I'm after advice regarding this repair. I assume the easiest option would to be to use a body cut from another van, but these seem to be hard to come by and expensive. How feasible would it be for an amateur such as myself to make the repair from sheet steel? My main concern is the awkward shape with so many curves going in different directions - particulary the inside of the corner.

Is it possible to buy a repair panel for this area? Metal Mickey, is this a section you could produce for a fee?

Also is it possible to reuse the old window rubber as a temporary measure, until I roller paint the van over winter, at which point I'll replace all the rubbers?

Cheers
Myles Kelly

Thanks MM, that was a great read. Very nice work. That level of fabrication is beyond my skill level so I think I'll op for a body cut.

Does anyone know of any VW breakers, particulary in the Cambridge/Suffolk/Essex area?
