Fuel pump
Just been recovered by the RAC. My fuel pump is cooked. Is it an easy replace or should I leave it with the garage in inverkeithing until they tell me it can't be repaired till next week?

Re: Fuel pump
as you dont tell us what engine, or what fuel pump its hard to reply
but, changing a fuel pump is pretty basic stuff, a couple of nuts and pipe clips , maybe a connector or two if its electric .... not really a garage job

Re: Fuel pump
As Mocki says really simple job - Brickwerks do a few different types so check the connector type on your current one and replace like for like.
You may as well replace the fuel pump push rod as well - only a few quid
Did the RAC check the fuel flow into a plastic bottle to determine a new pump?

Re: Fuel pump
No he didn't check the fuel flow! Does that involve removing the out pipe and tuning the ignition?

no it's not common.AlandAnn wrote:I'm guessing this is a common fault!
Your pump has probably given 30 years of service, it's done the job it was designed for.
Let's hope your new one lasts as long.

Re: Fuel pump
RAC man told the garage that the fuel pump was U/S.
Work done: fit new pump including gasket.
Remove app 20 litres from fuel tank.
Blow pipes to force crap back into tank.
Fill tank with £10 of petrol.
Fault diagnosis and test drive including 1 hrs labour.
Lesson learned ....check fuel flow if I have this problem again.
Next job......clean tank of crap? And sell or return my new fuel pump wot I bought before garage went ahead and did repair before I had a chance to get the bus back from them.

Re: Fuel pump
Check the breakdown report the RAC man should have given you. If it says "suspect fuel pump etc..." Then garage should have checked his diagnosis. If it just says "fuel pump U/S" then write a 'nicely' worded letter to the RAC including a copy of the breakdown report. Stating that your fault was miss diagnosed and that the garage had acted on the information given to them by an experienced breakdown technician costing you unnecessary money/time. Also mention the fact that a simple blocked fuel filter could (should) have been a roadside repair costing you nothing!

Re: Fuel pump
..and who made the fuel pump ?
Ding Dong, klick klack, or Charlie Chan?
Get your old pump back too.
Fuel filter £1.50
Shame they didn't tow you to GSF after you asked here first.
