Just got windows 10

Post by meggles »

And I am struggling with it. I'll persevere. I had a few automatic updates going on last night (Windows 7). Today my computer would not start up. Something about unauthorised changes. Got a message: "Press the N key to change the bios" or something like that. That confused me. Local shop said hard drive was kaput and I'd lost all of my photo's and documents. Probably caused by the hard drive misinterpreting the info in the upgrades (layman's terminology!!) So, a clean upgrade to 10. Everything is clearer and the sound is great, but it's all a bit new still. I'm struggling with things like getting the shortcut icons on the screen when I start up (I think that's the correct terminology). I'll get there, I have a young grandson after all.

Can't stand windows 10 myself. Had nothing but problems with it so I went back to Windows 7 and installed gwx stopper to get rid of the annoying nagging messages about upgrading to Windows 10.

In my view MS Windows peaked at XP and Office 2003 Pro. We have a couple of laptops running Windows 7 under protest but would have to "upgrade" many of our software packages and buy new touch screen machines in order to take dubious advantage of of the Windows 10. Don't fix what isn't busted.
Her ladyship uses her laptop mainly for her family history project and I have several computers on windows XP running my engineering based software off line and therefor free from the constant battering of updates and upgrade offers. Plus the effort I put in to become familiar with the packages isn't constantly eroded by jumbling of menus and moving functions about just in order to keep the sales of both software and hardware moving. Withdrawing support for XP has done me a favour.

Windows 10 is okay when you give it a bit of time. I've found its only good as a fresh install. But it doesn't work well with all windows 7 machines and some will have unsupported drivers that may not be updatable.
Its worth checking your machine before letting it update.
If you can have 2 hard drives or at least partition your hard drive into 2 then when you do these types of upgrades photos etc are better protected.
If you do have a on older machine that you only really use for the web and email then I would go over to Linux as it will make it a more useable machine. Our old laptops that the kids now have all run Linux.

I really want to get rid of Windows 10 on the machine I put it on but can't find out how. Any ideas? I think I'm 'out of time' to go back but feel like binning the PC.
Are we going on anything else?

Have a look in settings/recovery.

If the options not there and you have the product code you can reinstall via a download or if you have the cd.

If you have gone from Windows 7 to Windows 10 via the downloaded update, there will be an option to revert back to Windows 7, no cd required. That's what I did on my laptop.

I think this is where I got confused. The local computer geeks said not to upgrade to W10. Then my computer was totally fahooked. A new hard drive was fitted by them so it was a clean install so no problems with conflict with W7. Think I've got that right.

I have found this to be the best way to do a W10 upgrade, works every time :)
