Friend coming round tommorrow to help refit my recond box after collapse of spigot bearing and consequent disintegration of various transmission bits and lots of dosh outflowing! 3 queries:
1. Re. crankshaft oil seal: orange plastic lip of existing seal does not back onto the outermost spacer, should it? There's been no sign of engine oil loss, I'm replacing the seal anyway but can't figure out how this seal is working if it's inner lip (the orange bit) does not make contact with either the spacer nor does its inner circumference touch the flywheel boss at the end of the crank. Is there another internal seal or am I missing something here re oils seals.
2. Re. O Ring inside engine side of flywheel boss. Is this an oil limiting seal or what is it for. Does it need to be renewed as a matter of course?
3. Re starter: For some time prior to gearbox disaster, the starter has not been engaging properly. The shaft end bearing in the bellhousing has been replaced but this made no difference. The pinion teeth and flywheel teeth are ok and on examination of the starter, the solenoid and armature and clutch are fine. However, there is play between the pinion and the main shaft on which it runs. If I look at the cross section, it is possible to move the pinion, relative to the main shaft by around 2 to 3 mm and it looks as if something might be missing ( a liner of some sort) from between the outisde end of the pinion and the shaft. It's a Bosch starter.
Haynes gives no clue as to what should be there, I'm familiar and have searched wikki contet and other sites, any advice on any of these things greatly appreciated before tommorrow's re-installation
Thanks
Jim
