Oops! and Damn!

Coming up the mountain this morning, all going fine but with 2km to go and nowhere to pull over....... bty light came on, rev counter died, temp guage from showing slightly hot went right off the scale and the light was flashing, as I said, nowhere to pull over and only 2 k to go, little bit up then the rest down.
Did I do the wrong thing, have I cooked that little engine?
Got her back home and quickly parked, lifted the cover and found the auxilliary belt for water pump and alternator missing and that had caused the overflow pipe to pop off it's spigot.
So apart from having to get a new belt, what now should I check for, once cooled down?

Oh and which of the 7 sizes of belt (on Brickwerks) do I need?

Hey Brain, I was beginning to wonder (after 80 odd views) whether anyone cared!

I have not been back to the van since it happened, feeling sick to my stomach to tell the truth but I have other fish to fry at the moment.
Family arriving tomorrow evening so any work/investigation will be put on hold until they depart on the 6th.
As far as I know there was not much coolant left probably having all boiled away!
If you do have a belt that would be great.... I have asked brickwerks which one I need, in fact I should say I have asked them for both belts as I might as well do the two while I'm under there.

I did say to myself I would run this until it blows up then go for a 1.9 conversion but I wasnt planning on it just now, LOL.

She was running so well since the service as well.
So what's the worst I can expect, head warped? blown seals? I really don't know where to start on this!

Have a look on "vagcat", mine uses one belt! Fill it with water n see what happens!

Oil probably killed too. Overcooked mine a while back. It came back to life but soon had slow drips from water jackets. For now I just top it up every day. Heat bad for many parts of an engine. I think I'd see if I could turn it over by hand first, change the oil and as Dave says, fill it up with water and see what happens.

Thanks for the replies. Had a quick look on the ground this morning and there is an oil patch! Never had a leak before, couldn't see exactly where it's coming from and just now I don't have the time to investigate further.
Luckily the van is parked facing slightly uphill so filling should not be a problem (hopefully).
I'll post up when I get the time (family coming today for holiday).

So, after grandchildrens visit, I have finally found time to have a look at what's what.

Water on the dipstick, that's bad isn't it

On the belt sizes, the remaining PS belt is marked 10 x 763 it's a contitech.

Measured with a bit of string the Alt and W.P. pullys and that came to approx 850mm. Does that sound about right?

Going to put some water in and try to turn by hand.

So, in reverse, handbrake off and pulled backwards, watching the main pully moving so it's not seized.
Dalek cap off and added about 1 litre water there, added another litre-ish to the overflow and removed the rad bleed screw!

Lot's of funny gurgling noises and bubbles and whistling, eventually all the hoses seemed to be full when squeezed.
Can't do much more, one man band sort of effort and waiting for the correct W.P/Alt belt.

Is there anything else I can do by myself?

Sooo finally found the time to faff around with the old girl.
Dalek cap off, started her up, started OK...... now I may be a bit paranoid but she did sound a bit rattly, more so than usual.... Hard to say really.
Let her warm up on tickover till temp gauge sat just below LED as normal, opened up the bleed screw (Jacked up at the front and already on a slight slope, held the 2000 rpm for a while, bear in mind I have not changed the oil yet (top of the to do list at the weekend) nothing coming out of front, so just shut her down for the time being. Waiting until fresh oil is in and a helping hand at the weekend before going any further.
Encouraging sign was starting first time, and did seem to quiet down after warming up.

I did take a couple of vids for the noise, do I have to host them on photobucket before getting them on here.
I have posted one up on facebook though.

Just a quick question regarding the oil change, do I need to replace the filter as well, or will the fresh oil suffice?

Regardless of if you think it may have mixed its fluids, defo fit a fresh filter with fresh oil.

PS I assume from OP's mention of "the head" and "changing to a 1.9" that its a diesel?

Was the water on the dipstick just like condensation or was the oil milky?

Yes a 1.6 JX.
That water on dipstick was clear, not at all mixed so thinking on, yes it probably was condensation.
Filter change it is then.

OIl changed and started the bleeding process.
One man band time so although I got water coming out of the bleed screw at the rad I was unable to do all the things required, every time I backed off from 2000 rpm the coolant came back at me and overflowed the tank!
So today armed with the last of my coolant I will find a friend and get this bled!

Are you sure the dalek cap as you call it is ok, you will not bleed the coolant correctly if it cant keep the pressure. i spent ages once trying to bleed after a subaru conversion and couldnt do it because of a faulty cap. Is the cap the same one that was on when you overheated the engine ?
