Engine Cutting Out
Hi all, I currently have a 1.9DG petrol I was just out driving it when it's developed a idling problem. Whenever I came to a stop it would cut out and I had to keep up the revs to keep it going. However when I parked up on my driveway and let it idle it ran fine.

Hello.
There have been a few threads just recently entitled 'cutting out', and lots more in the archives. Do a search first and check some of them out- it'll be a question of working through the likely causes that the resident experts have suggested from the simplest things first (such as a blocked fuel filter or dirt in the carb, even bad electrical grounds) and ruling things out one by one. There could be several causes of poor idling - fuel system, carb, timing, ignition, vacuum lines - chances are it will prove to be something pretty mundane and easy to sort. Here's hoping...
I solved a poor idle and occasional cutting out and mis-fires by doing a major service at home - all easy stuff for a novice like me. I replaced plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotor, new fuel lines, new vac lines, new ignition amplifier and coil, new ignition switch, new air filter, cleaned the carb (and the tiny fuel filter its fuel inlet). New battery as the old was a little weak. Cleaned the earth crown by the fuse-box, the body earth by the battery and the one on the gearbox.
The result was a return to sweet running, but of course the downside is that I don't know exactly which part or parts cured the fault because I did it all at once. Best practise to save expense would be to do one thing at a time but if your van had a lot of original parts on it like mine did, it can't hurt to chuck a few new ones at it for the sake of preventative maintenance. Especially fuel lines...

Re: Engine Cutting Out
Hi
My van had the exact same symptoms when I bought it. Mine is Aircooled so I don't know if the same would apply, but mine was caused by a pipe that joins the two carbs being disconnected from one of the carbs.
It runs along the back the engine. Might be worth checking that, and any other carb pipes/breathers etc.

Re: Engine Cutting Out
Afternoon, here's a couple to get you on your way, as mentioned it could be a number of things and you'll need to eliminate things one by one.

Re: Engine Cutting Out
As above do some digging around on the forum, a few factors can cause this, I had at least two that I fixed when my bus wouldn't idle. Be methodical and you'll figure it out
