Failed MOT today

Post by Ian_Fearn »

I need 4 new steering rack mounting bushes and a steering arm which apparently has some play in it.

Not sure about the last one. Any idea where the play would be in the steering arm?

mounting bushes.. get some of the brickwerks ones..

steering arm? the bit from the rack to the ball joint? if the "arm" has play, that could mean its in the rack end, or is it actually the ball joint?

might need them to show you whats got play...

According to the MOT tester (VW main dealer) the play is in a knuckle that is part of the arm, not at the ball joint.

OK, then that can be removed from the rack.. its in the rack boot... got a feeling they are about 45 quid, but might want to check if its the same as a 2wd...

But I'd call that a track rod end whereas it seems what is worn is the other end, inside the rack assembly.

Have ordered the bits from GSF today. I pulled the rack off in about 35 minutes which was a doddle.

I'm a little confused though because both the rack mounts AND tie rods seem absolutely fine.
