Post by j_robi »

hiya, i'm deliberating over a conversion to 2.1dj drom my 1.9dg. on gas presently, run at about 10.5p per mile (nice)

would a 2.1 be a whole lot thirstier? if so, its prob. not worth me changing i dont think

cheers

Hi There mate

I have i converted from a 1.9DG to a Dj last summer, have not actually equated the MPG yet but contrary o belief i find it nothing but economical.

I travelled to Ireland last year and was pleasantly suprised. I feilled up 45 miles north of Dublin on the way home, drove to Dubin caught the ferry and then drove from Holyhead to Eassex and had quarter of a tank left at the end of the Journey.

thats around about a 400 mile journey, if someone knows the capacity of the tank on my van an work out the MPG i'm guessing roughly around 45 litres or so

that makes it about 350 miles from a tank. (350/20=17.5gallons 17.5*4.54609= 79.55) Assuming 20 miles to the gallon that would mean you have about an 80L tank. Sure you didn't switch to petrol at some point, you'd know if you had an 80L tank.

The easist solution would be to keep all your "DG" carb etc and fit the 2.1 to it.. this works very well and the extra torque is very welcome, it wont use any more fuel unless you really use the extra performance.. in reality you tend to drive easier as there is more grunt available, so dont have to work the engine as much...

400 miles??? er dont think thats possible even at 30 mpg you would need 60L to cover that... so unless you have a larger tank!!!!
assuming 14/tank is about 10L (as the gauge really falls in that last bit..) 400 miles would have to be 36mpg... I would like to see a wbx do that and still be powering itself along......

How many L do you normally put in? and what normal range do you get?
saying X miles on "half a tank" is not very acurate...

My 1.9 dg syncro does 24-25 mpg sitting at 3800-4000 rpm (about 110-120kmh) on the autoroutes... thats about as good as it gets... the 2wd caravelle was only that good too...

thanks for the replies guys. in terms of keeping dg bits ie. carb, what else could/should i keep?
i guess this would affect the resale of my dg though if i kept bits from it...?

the other thing im wondering about is how smooth the conversion of my gasure lpg system will be from by 1.9dg to a 2.1dj.

any advise appreciated
thanks, joe

tooman, unless my mileage calculations were out, or my fuel gauge is inaccurate the rest of my last post was fact.

My tank was filled up around 40 miles north of Dublin, a full tank normally costs me in the region of £50 so i am assuming tank capacity of roughly 45 - 50 litres? would that sound about right.

I did not re-fill for the remainder of the journey back to essex and my guage was reading around about 1/4 of a tank when we arrived home. unless needle is out and i was running on vapours.

only time i find the van gets bad economy is when town driving

I managed 27mpg out of my 2.1 dj auto (new vege engine) on the way to Vanfest last year.
I was cruising 60mph most of the way but put my foot down for the last 40 miles or so.

Transfer of gas from 1.9 to 2.1 easy - but we kept the carb from the 1.9, as Pete said that this was the easiest option for the gas conversion.

Had old 1.9 out, new (to us, anyway!) engine in, and running on gas by mid afternoon. Started around 8.30am.

Well.. the tanks are 60L and if the speedo is accurate then 50L of fuel to do 400 miles would be 36.33mpg...

of course, if it was 400km it would be about 22.5 mpg... which would be a "normal" reading...

Which port did you travel from?
Hollyhead to LoS is about 300miles which would give 27mpg...
more belivable and attainable...

we travelled from dublin to holyhead, and then from holyhead to leigh on sea.

have just itemised the journey

Drogheda - Dublin = 30.7 miles
Holyhead - LOS via A55 = 320 miles

total journey of 350.7ish miles

hiya ernie. thanks for the info.
did you swap the lpg system over yourslef? or does it require gasure personnel?
if i was to use the 1.9dg carb on the 2.1 (for the ease of lpg system transfer), would the 2.1dj carb fit onto the 1.9 engine for resale purposes?

31.8mpg... possible, but very extraordinarily good.. it dont get better thats for sure.. you must drive like an eco warrior..........

2.1 doesnt have a carb.. the injection system will fit but isnt really worth doing so to a 1.9..

thank for the forum reply toomanytoys, my pm messages dont appear to be working. So in terms of using the 1.9carb for the 2.1 is that an easy thing to do?

how much would a replacement carb be for the 1.9 to make it sellable?
thnaks joe

Its not an issue using the carb on a 2.1.. but it isnt just swapping the carb, you need to swap the manifold and even water pump (better to fit a new one) depending on what cooling system you have...

check out why your PM's are not working, I have sent some info...

or mail, me I will respond tonight...

Not worth buying a carb for the 1.9 to sell on.. a good engine is only worth what its worth especially if the carb is unknown really..
