I mentioned a few weeks ago that my engine maybe on its way out. I still need to clear hoses out, and check where the leaks are coming from but, an opportunity to purchase a spare motor and a 5 Speed box has come up, apparently only 50k use. But been out of a vehicle for a while.
Is there a way to compression test it easily whilst its out? Is there anyways to check the decency of the motor? I don't really know the owner.
Thinking of using it whilst i rebuild mine or rebuild it and run mine to the ground.

Bolt the gearbox to the engine stick a starter motor on, connect it to a battery and away you go.

yes you can do a compression check and worth it but it won't tell you if the big ends are shot or the water jacket seals are shot for example.
Always better/less risk to buy an engine you can see running, you have a bit of time so hang out for a runner IMO

I've turned over an engine with a socket on a cordless drill (it's 36 volts though!), assisted by removing the spark plugs from the cylinders that weren't being tested. I'd be interested to see if an 18v drill would turn over a dg, too late, cold, dark to go and experiment now though.
Why would the glass be anything other than half full?

Cheers for the replies. I'll wait to see what can find out about these engines and most importantly how much the chap wants for one. if its a few cans of stella I dont min taking the risk!
