Whirling noise from engine?

I need to diagnose a whirling noise from the engine. It occurs when it's in gear and when I excelerate and it's especially prevalent I drive above 40 mph up hill. It sound a bit like a train on a track .... Chuck chuck.....chuck chuck. A mechanic told me it could be the alternator, water pump or cam belt. Anyone else have the same noise? Thanks for your att.
