Now I have got the engine running ok on the van (after 5 months of struggle and a carb rebuild) I need to replace all 4 tyres. The guy I bought it from left it standing for 3 + years and never moved it so the tyres walls are badly cracked and I don't fancy a blow out on the motorway with the wife and kids on board.
It has alloys fitted see picky below and currently has Torneo 215/55 R16 97V Extra Load tyres on it. Any advice to what load rating or a particular tyre brand would be most welcomed. Not too worried about the cost more about getting the right type of tyre.
The original Carat Wheel/tyre option was 205/70 R14, these were '97' rated, the standard 185R14C tyres were 99/101.
On that basis, the lowest 'load rating' that came from the factory was 97 and that would be my minimum when looking at replacements.
This will normally mean buying tyres with the 'XL' designation (extra load) or better still; C rated (commercially rated) which normally means they have stiffer side walls with extra ply's.
I would go for commercially rated tyres if they are available in the size you are after, if not XL's possibly 98's.
