Anyone got a gearbox on the bench and a tape measure to hand
I would really appreciate someone telling me (to the nearest 5 mm) the vertical offset between the centres of the input shaft and output (CV) shafts on a 5-speed.
I need this to compare against my UN1 and work out if the engine will need to be dropped.
There used to be a useful marked-up photo on the samba comparing these dimensions on the 094 to a Subaru 5MT (subarugears thread?) but it seems to have disappeared.
Ta.

ZXR750 is a member on here who sent me a pic of his a few days ago.
It was off of the van and on a bench so he must have been working on it recently.
5sp too, so maybe PM him, or hope he reads your ask here....
I'm not 100% sure what the bits are you mention, but if it needs to be insitu for the measurements, I will try for you tomorrow if it helps.
But you will need to expand on the ask for me to picture what you need - I'm still learning LOL

I have a 4sp box in the shed but often wondered how you work out what is the centreline of the box?
is the engine and box parallel with the road when fitted?
The short piece of the input shaft is not enough to get an accurate centre line.

Will the bell housing face give you an accurate perpendicular to the centre line?

My dialemma is that the UN1 places the CV's rather higher when compared to an 094.
Not as bad as a flipped Audi transaxle but you get the idea.
An insutu guesstimate I could do myself but its not accurate enough, could easily be miles out.
The engine and transmission point downwards toward the front of the van.

Yes I had a moment of clarity while eating dinner, of course, the engine is perpendicular to the bell housing so the gearbox input shaft must be

You're welcome, I can't see a 5sp would be dimensionally different to the drive shafts.

Re: Anyone got a gearbox on the bench and a tape measure to hand
I suspect that they are all the same. Now to compare to the UN1...

Re: Anyone got a gearbox on the bench and a tape measure to hand
Went back through the Superboxer thread, the UN1 puts the diff more like 75mm below the input shaft so if anything the engine would be raised a little.
I cant afford 15mm less above the engine so the transmission will have to stay put!

can't see 15mm making a difference, people lower vans by much more which affects drive shaft geometry the same I'd think.

This one is already lowered: H&R Cup kit. But strictly a 5-seater. No ballast
