Wipers and washers not working
Both decided to stop working the other day but fortunately it wasn't raining. Today I thought I had better check it out and first looked at the fuses. In the fuse box behind the glove box there was a blown fuse, number 10 of 12, so tried to find out if this was the fuse. Various wiring diagrams seemed to show different arrangements but I couldn't find one that said number 10 was the wipers but did find a few that suggested number 2 fuse. Just for fun I took number 2 fuse out and put it in position 10 and the wipers and washers worked so I had found part of the problem. Put the fuse back in its original place and the question to the learned people here is, what rating fuse do I buy for the wipers? Just replacing with what was there I know can be wrong as after all these years and all the different owners, fuses can get mixed up.
Hopefully the reason the fuse blew in the first place might be down to dodgy connections at the fuse box which I have now cleaned up. If not, I'll be back!
Cheers
Paul

Re: Wipers and washers not working
Many thanks for that. Also interesting to see that all the fuses are rated 8 Amp but I'm sure that they are not all the same in my box so I might need to change a few. 7 is shown as a spare so I could move that one to 10 for now.

Re: Wipers and washers not working
When wipers/washers don't work, does blower? On pre-85 they're all on one fuse (see blower section in WIKI) and a tired blower will sometimes pop this fuse. Whatever you do, don't increase fuse value - find the cause or at least split blower from wipers.

Re: Wipers and washers not working
Hmmm, more to think about. The blower always worked fine when I wanted it but I didn't test it when the wipers stopped. The wipers on the other hand always started off slowly and took a couple of wipes to get up to speed. The wipers didn't stop while in use but didn't start when I tried them.
I wonder if 10 is rated at 16A because it also does the rear screen. Not sure I have a rear screen heater so could be OK at 8A but I will try to put the right fuses in all positions soon.
The other 16A rated circuit is hazard warning, does that really need that? Just tested my hazard warning lights and 1) they didn't work and 2) a funny noise was heard under the dash so I turned it off.

Re: Wipers and washers not working
Methinks you is having a earthing issue !
Hazards don't need 16a , 4x21w only needs 7amp
So 8amp fuse is plenty even with a trailer adding two more bulbs 10amp would be more than good enough

Which is 2.5A more than an 8A fuse why they fitted the next size up 16A.Mocki wrote: So 8amp fuse is plenty even with a trailer adding two more bulbs 10amp would be more than good enough

Re: Wipers and washers not working
Fuses aside, if wipers started slowly, wiper motor could be on way out or linkages seized.
