Repair panel availability for engine compartment?

Post by Monkeyarmada »

Hello, I've been offered a T25 (would be my first T25, but not my first rusty VW) for a fairly good price, but having a poke around the engine compartment shows a fair amount of corrosion to the rear firewall. Is there a repair panel available for this area? Google is not giving me any useful results, but I could be searching for the wrong terms.

Here is a pic of the offending panel. It seems an odd place for so much corrosion to me, being so close to the heat and oil that's usually splashing about.

I'd love to hear any thoughts on this!

Cheers.

Wow that looks pretty rusty. If it's rusty there, I'd be more worried about the condition of the rest of it. Would it have had an engine fire at some point?

Thanks for the reply, not sure about a fire, the interior (roof lining, door cards etc.) look original so I doubt it would have. It's a puzzle, in all the pics I've seen of T25 engine bays, this isn't a part that rusts (as much!). I wonder if there was a fuel/fluid leak that has just destroyed the paintwork over time, exposing the metal?

This area happens to be the worse in my van too. Must be a reason for it.
Why would the glass be anything other than half full?

It's a fairly thin piece of metal exposed on both sides with no support. This makes it flexible and could be the reason for it corroding so much. I am not an expert but that would be my guess. I have never seen an off the shelf repair panel for this bit.

Just make it from flat metal - it has shapes but they serve not much purpose. That is awful looking though!

Ive seen them rot there but not that bad, I can see its a late t25. Id forget it and look else where, it will be rotten in other key areas.

Many thanks for the responses, I think it's safe to say that I'll be walking away from this one. The van is in a weird place, it's had a lot of rot cut out with new metal let in and looks to be generally solid. It's even had a (respray in that last 12 months. It's just a shame they didn't fix the final few red flags. If it wasn't for the rot at the back it would have been a simple 'bolt it all back together' project.

For the curious here is a pic of the van,

cheers again!
