Oh dear. Sounds expensive.

Big lumps of metals and spanners. Including servicing and fluids.

Oh dear. Sounds expensive.

Post by windydubber »

Our van has been using lots of oil recently. Took her into my mechanic who has prepared me for the worse case scenario as I always want to know it! Let's hope it isn't an engine re build!!!!!

I somehow don't think I'm that lucky. Better start saving!

On the up-side, air-cooled engines aren't too hard to find, if the worst comes to the worst....
Lets hope it's something not too expensive.

Re Build or Re con??

Post by windydubber »

Unfortunately I need a new engine! I won't go in to detail but long story short, repair nearly as mush as a change. So...
My choice is a rebuild or a recon. Cost isn't that much different. The rebuild does come in a little more but my mechanic has pointed out that he has been using the same guy to rebuild engines for years and we will know that he has used quality components etc. I'm swaying toward this but would be grateful for any input.
Nice expensive start to the new year!

New engine or rebuild required! Nightmare. I knew at some point I would change the engine but hoped that it wouldn't be for a year or so.

Lol. That would be nice but changing an air cooled to a TDI may just break me!

I'm in the same situation rebuild or re con? It's a 1.6td burning oil but other than that it's a good engine so maybe better the devil you know. But as you say it will be a expensive start to the year.
