Storing the van under a cover all Winter will pretty much guarantee trapped moisture and a damp environment for the vehicle even on dry days - you'll have mould in the interior come Spring and also paint damage from rubbing as the cover flaps in the wind unless it is very highly secured. You may also find that rust bubbles turn into patches more quickly. I wouldn't use one again - only good for protecting against bird mess, leaves and dust but rust and damp is much worse.

Clean the van thoroughly including rust-traps under the arches and so on, then apply a quality wax (not polish) to protect the paint, coat paint faults and repel water. crack open a window or a vent on dry days sometimes to keep it properly aired. If it's not SORN, take it out and get it hot sometimes too - I just don't think that laying a vehicle up for months on end can be very good for it, they're designed to be kept in motion after all.

Agreed don't cover it.
Carnuba wax is the best you can get.
