Cost of Service?

Hello again people
Thanks to all who gave a bit of advice re my steering drift etc, I realise that this really is the place to vent my VW paranoia, instead of coming up with worst case senarios everytime I flick through the Haines manal.

On advice I have booked my van in for the wheel poblem and thought I might aswell get it serviced whilst its in ( kid on the way and thought now is a good time before I have even less money)!

Question is , is £200 about right and what sort of things will they check over and can I point him in the ways of my woes, or is it just oil change/ tyre pressure etc for 200 big ones?

I was quoted £147+vat plus parts for an engine service, (2.1 injection, water) by a VW specialist. So if that is a full service, ie. check brakes, steering and all the other bit and bobs, it sounds cheep.

Who would live down south eh?
I charge £120 plus VAT for Diesels and injections, £110 for carb models.
A full service is air, oil, fuel filters, oil change.
Spark plugs on Petrols.
All wheels, tyres, brakes suspension checked.
Brakes adjusted and cleaned.
All lights and levels checked/rectified.
Coolant strength checked, belts....
You know, a full service!
Thats parts and labour!
Thats probably why people are willing to come from London, leave the van with me, go back to London on the train, and come up a few days later when it's done, it's a fairly regular occurance, even with the train fares it still works out cheaper than the garages down there!
All the parts on the self, all spares charged out at JK/GSF prices and only £28 per hour plus VAT for labour!

For that sort of money I'd want the works. Oil, oil filter, air filter petrol filter, Parts cant be more than £30. Get a list of what they do. TBH you'd be better doing it yourself, can you use a spanner filter wrench and a screwdriver? then you can do your own basic service. What you wont get is a run down of what else needs doing.

No point in asking us what he will do.. you need to ask him what it is he is going to do for 200.... sounds like a lot of money to me..

Hacksawbob....I did say I was quoted. I did not say I got it done. I did most of it my self and got my son to help with the bits I could not manage. A combination of old age and body not working at full function

But on a serious note Si knows his stuff, but he is oop north with us right minded folks, down there you have to add a chunk cos everything else is inflated - rent, kit, consumables, etc.
