Turns over with the ign. key out

Post by Blofeld »

Van has had the slow starter otor thing for a while now but been too lazy to fix it  has always started firts time until the fog!!

I got in it to do a bit of christmas shopping and it wouldn't start but was slowly turning over. i tried a second time but nothing . lights on the dash dimming. trying a third time the ligt when out and a warm electrical smell was emintating from beneath me!

i removed the key but the '86 'velle continued to tun over albeit very sllloowwwlyy!! i removed the batery lead that were hot in case it caught fire while i walked to the shops!

anyway stil broken  - loooked at the ign key and it moulded in so no way of freeing a sticky switch -

assume there is a relay between ign switch and starter - could that have stuck open?

haven't tried it this week but when i did reconnect the battery it did the same thing.

can anyone help point me in the right direction

EH????

if you removed the key and its still trying to turn over, you need to check a few things...
is it really the ign switch at fault
is it a wiring fault
is the starter solenoid stuck "on" (on the starter)

a good once over with a tester set on continuity is required BEFORE fitteing a battery again...

Or you will have a fire!!!!

Pull of the thin wire on the back of the solenoid (the small cylinder above the starter!), then reconnect the battery.

If it still turns over, your solenoid is stuck.

If it now behaves until you reconnect the thin wire then you have a problem with your ignition switch (or wires to and from.)

thanks guys

I was worried about fire too so the battery has remained disconnected!

The starter is not very old I replaced it when I bought the van feb 2006. It still turned over slowly so i think the bush needs changing.

I pulled the starter out and it looked ok so slung it back in. but still does the same. I'll check over the circuit and see. suppose you can 'lubricate' the solenoid can you?

Slow Starter

I had the same problem, seemed to be eased by a full charge on the battery, then got worse , took off the starter cleaned it all up lubed it and still the same problem. Solved it eventually with a new starter, you might be lucky
