Hot starting problem

Post by SteveW »

We have a problem on a 84 1.9 DG Caravelle. It starts well from cold but will not when hot. It is just like a flat battery. Which it is not as the battery is new and is fine once the engine has cooled down. Starts on the bump after a very short run. I know you are all thinking starter bush but I have changed that too. Any ideas before we lash out on a new starter motor.

Cheers Steve

Expand "won't start"...won't turn over... won't catch..won't run..which?

If it won't turn over on the key it could be the starter soleniod sticking when hot...remove and clean out and lubricate

Kev
The problem was, when hot the engine was reluctant to turn over as if the battery is flat. This seems to be cured now. I tapped the bush in flush (probably only another .5mm in) and cleaned the terminal, tags and the gearbox earth wire. But have now created another problem.
Yesterday we changed plugs, dizzey cap and rotor arm as part of the service.
Today will start from cold no problem but when warm to hot will now spin over fast but not fire I do not think the problem is ignition based but could be the choke staying on. I intend starting from cold tomorrow go for a drive to warm the engine then remove the air inlet manifold (plastic pancake on the carb) to see if the choke is open or closed.
Any further thoughts would be good.

Thanks Steve
