Hi, any advise on this one..? Air-cooled 2 litre T25 1982. Week ago heard loud knocking sound from engine, stopped, seemed to recover then drove home slowly all seemed OK. Some loose metalwork on heat exchanger & baffles loose, so tied up with wire in case it was just a loud rattle! Next outing clouds of white smoke billowing out of exhaust after a mile or so, engine still running OK. Stopped, let it cool down couple of hours. Started OK got home again slowly but smoke started up again after a few minutes. Now stuck on the drive wondering what to do next.
Thanks for your ideas, Graham

What's the crank case pressure like when the engine is idling...?
Pop the oil filler cap off, anything more than a gentle flutter of air on your hand and you have a worn bore/rings/holed piston..
Other things to look at are:
Oil level... Gone up or down??
Diesel in petrol??

Oil level seem unchanged, taking off oil filler cover and feeling for draught shows some 'flutter' and a little positive blow/pressure. Exhaust appears clear at first then white smoke appears as it warms up or is revved further. Some of the crankcase breather tubes were a little loose and do show signs of some oiling inside. Thanks for any further thoughts or things to try, I'm suspecting leaking valve stem seals but wonder how to test this idea before committing to taking the engine out and apart (which I've never done before..), Graham

Re: Clouds of white smoke, air cooled T25
hi, is it a manual or automatic?
i had the experience on a bay window 2 litre automatic that the engine intake manifold balance pipes, which were connected to the automatic gearbox, was sucking the oil out of the auto box, burning and blowing it out of the exhaust...

Hi, its a manual transmission, standard model, all the balance pipes are in good order but some are a bit oily inside - how did you fix yours?

the auto box was replaced, in the end, as it ran dry and was no good anymore..this would not apply to you, as you have a manual box.
