Just a reminder to check those coolant hoses! - update

Post by 300CE »

Have replaced a few on mine, but typically one of the ones I hadn't changed split on me yesterday. Luckily the low level warning light came on and I managed to pull straight over before the needle moved over to the dark side!

Still had coolant left in the header tank which was pleasing to see & located the pipe to the one on the right hand side cylinder head. Undid the jubilee clip, gaffer taped the hell out of it, re-tightened and re-filled the tank so managed to get home with only a minimal amount lost.

Amazing that a £7.50 piece of rubber could have become so catastrophic so will be replacing the rest asap!

Check yours to see if they feel 'squishy' or look swollen :ok

Definitely worth doing Daz, I already replaced the stupidly expensive one that runs from the header tank to carb as the original one had seen better days.

And while you're at it, check all the thin ones for blockages (by blowing down them).

Well, I changed the menacing hose today but strangely could not find any splits in the old hose. My presumption is that the end had become pretty swollen and was not sealing properly. With the new one on, went for a 20 min ride brought van up to temperature (dead centre) and no leaks that I could see when I returned.

Will take her for an hours ride tomorrow to see how she gets on but fingers crossed all is ok.

This is interesting.
Sorry if I sound a bit dim but my temperature gauge keeps rocketing fairly fast, say within 10 mins of driving. I did a 40min drive and the red light starting flashing (first time ive ever seen that) Today I bled the radiator but no change. Could it be the coolant hose is leaking?

Thanks Emma

Could be a number of things Emma - when the light started flashing did you pull over and check the level in the header tank (the bigger tank you can see when you take the lid off)? Also where was the needle sitting when it started flashing - was it near the middle or all the way over to the right?

If it's was the former it could be a leak from anywhere - are there any patches on the floor after you've taken it for a run & parked it up? It could also have just been low, do you check the level regularly?

Thanks 300c - I didnt check the level in the big tank just the expansion tank, as at the time I had limited understanding of the tanks - i've now genned up!
The arm was to the left of the flashing light, so it wasn't over to the right. I've not noticed any patches...well, I've noticed patches of oil but not of water, but perhaps previously I've passed them off as rain patches? eek.

Thanks for you help
