Power spark dizzy
Hi, i was wondering has anyone fitted the power spark 034 svda electronic distributor with the single vac can on it to there CU engine ?
If so how much better did it run ? & is it worth the investment ?

Re: Power spark dizzy
Doesn't the CU engine have advance and retard vacuum?

Love the 'ploddy' nature of your videos Sarran. Always feel I should be sat watching with a mug of tea.

Re: Power spark dizzy
It works if you have no other choice but it is not an improvement over the original distributor. The original Hall ignition is much better with variable dwell producing more powerful spark at cranking speeds and the advance curve is the best suited to the CU engine.vwaddict wrote:

Re: Power spark dizzy
Ok then, if the original set up is best, how important is it to have the idle stabilising unit connected ? Mine has been removed & bypassed so when i had it tuned the other week by an old school vw mechanic he disconected one of the vacuum pipes as he said it was affecting the running of the engine...the one that go's to the air filter, nearest the dizzy ??

Re: Power spark dizzy
Not very it just smooths out the idle speed.vwaddict wrote:Ok then, if the original set up is best, how important is it to have the idle stabilising unit connected ?
That vac pipe retards the timing at idle and on the overrun for exhaust emissions, but how was it effecting the engine?vwaddict wrote:so when i had it tuned the other week by an old school vw mechanic he disconected one of the vacuum pipes as he said it was affecting the running of the engine...the one that go's to the air filter, nearest the dizzy ??

Re: Power spark dizzy
Hello,
Well thanks,
I try to show 'how to'..and explain why..
Cup of tea..or a cool beer (preferably Fullers London Pride)... about the right pace..
Back on topic..
I've set up a few of these..with good results..the Hall effect electromechanical ignition was great at the time.
It was part of the VW drive at the time to produce the low maintenance engine.
At 40 years old it will be past it's best..
Transistorised ignition (powerspark type) is good..as once set..it is very reliable..
However.. as BH says..it is good to have more control over the distribution curve..
WARNING....HERESY ALERT
A points and condenser dizzy gives you the benefit of being able to set the dwell angle correctly...
44 degrees........
Demo:

There is a downside.....
you have to
lift the engine hatch..dust the motor..and check the distributor points..
My CT..1288 kg..1.6 CT raised compression,ignition as in video..28 MPG on motorway..cruising 93 kph..max 115..
Does motorway hills in 4th....overtakes white boxes..
...I smell woodsmoke..
