2.0l CU Oil leak from blow by

Post by masansom »

Hi all, new to the forum and T25's, I have a 82 Aircooled camper that soon after purchase (possibly before but I don't think so) developed an extensive oil leak. I have checked all the usual suspects, pressure switches, rocker covers and oil cooler seals etc, and have come to the conclusion that the oil is being blow out of the tube which sits next to the air filter.

I understand that during normal operation a little excess oil is meant to be burned but on my engine it is dumping ~1 liter/mile into the engine bay.

Has anyone got any ideas why and potential remedies?

Engine overfilled with oil? Or high crankcase pressure from worn pistons/rings.

Engine not over full, if going by dip stick but may need to check that the length is correct, would also be surprised if engine was that worn as was replaced in 2010 and only a few thousand miles since. Any other possibilities or is that it?

Guess that new rings is a major rebuild job?

Hello,

Some photos..or even a video will help..

Was the engine running ok before.. and does it start and run smoothly now.. :?:

Huge crankcase pressure is not good but not fatal.

Does the breather vent to atmosphere, or is it connected to the air intake.. :?:

If you drain the oil, leaving the filter..just over 3 litres will bring you to the lower mark.

While the oil is out..remove the spark plugs..clean the bolt on the turbine..13mm. take the rocker covers off.

these vids will help you to see the necessary:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KkyBAMMHpa4" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Get your assistant to turn the engine clock wise so that you can watch that all the valves and springs open and close properly

As the engine has been overhauled in the past..it may have either 'solid' or hydraulic cam followers.. if solid there should be 0.3 mm of play..

if hydraulic.. contact plus 1 turn.

go through at least 3 rotations.

If all seems OK.. refill and refit the rocker boxes.

Using the starter motor and a compression tester check each cylinder..

Just before start up on this one..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=la9UI9FzEFo" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You want about 8 bar on all 4 cylinders...

That will keep you busy for a bit... :)

Hope this helps..

Cordialement,

:ok

Thanks for the hints, will look to get some photos, the engine starts and runs fine.

I haven't got a compression gauge will look to procure on in the near future

From what I understand from other descriptions I think (hope) that the volume of oil coming out precludes high crank pressure.

I have a suspicion that the dip stick is too short and hence I have put too much oil in, when I drained it to check the filter seal it had nigh on 6l, but I assumed this was correct because it came half way up the dip stick.

Can any one confirm the correct length of the dip stick, I understand that it is in the region of 550 mm, mine is much shorter roughly 350 mm?

Also for comparison the length of the dip stick tube would be helpful?

Hi, I have just been and checked my dip stick length (wait for that to be taken out of context :rofl ) and it is 570 mm between the end and the underside of the rubber seal at the top.
Hope that helps :ok

Yes they are, the easiest option it to get a longer one from a Golf/Polo or such and cut it down and mark it.

Drained ~6.5l of oil out of the van replaced with 4.5l and everything runs fine.

Now need to remove dip stick tube before measuring, oil is then about 100 mm from the bottom of the sump, does this sound correct?

Definitely 3.5l with filter. Just done mine and it took it to 3/4 to top oil marker. You door need to make sure it's on the flat as it will read well out on a slope.
