Distributor electrical arc sound when ignition is turned on?

Good afternoon all,

When I turn the ignition on (first position,with out starting or cranking the engine) I get a continuous clicking noise coming from the distributor, sounds very much like electrical arcing?

Any ideas what could be causing it ?

Have you disconnected the lead from the coil to the distributor to see if that stops it?
