Clutch

Post by D16LJM »

I have replaced my slave cylinder as it was weeping, I have bled the system and what came out was completely black but I now think my master cylinder may be knackered, if you push the pedal down pretty quick it moves the arm for the clutch o.k but if you push down slow it has less movement and you can see it creeping back, does this sound like the master cylinder letting by, no evidence of any leaks anywhere through the system.

Do you have clean and clear brake fluid coming out of the slave cylinder ?

Yes clear fluid now, have bled it a few times locking the nipple off before the pedal is lifted each time.

Usual symptom of a failing master cylinder is a pool of brake fluid on the mat below the steering column. Is the actuation rod properly seated ? The slave cylinder seated properly in it's bracket ?

all appears to be seated correctly and I drove it 30 miles earlier but still has a pressure fault, if pumped it seams o.k but press the peddle a bit slower and its not pushing down on the arm far enough, definitely no visible leaks and clear fluid coming through.

Mmmm, maybe you are right ... check for leaks around the master if your van has carpets maybe you can smell the fluid in the carpet ?) often new parts can find a weakness in older parts in the same chain.

a master cylinder isn't expensive and the state of the fluid that come out it wont hurt to replace.

Thanks Pete

Master cylinder is fiddly but not hard (depends how small your hands are  ), bleeding is easy ... I just kept tapping mine with a screwdriver and the bubbles rise up into the reservoir ... seems like it will never bleed up though at first.

The front to back clutch pipe also corrodes ... normally above the fuel tank  :rofl and where it passes through the chassis legs. Just saying while you are looking at the clutch system :ok Mine is in 3 pieces with compression fittings before and after the tank.

Did you wedge the release bearing arm before you bled it?
