Between my cooling system issue and my oil leaking problem, I'm not sure which to tackle first really. Nevertheless, spilling oil at the rate Marv does is making a mess of my driveway, so I'd figured I'd look at that first. Cleaned off all the wet oil from the bottom and ran it for 10 minutes on the drive with some white paper underneath to spot where the drops were coming from.

There are two easily identifiable leaky bits.

Small amount coming from the sump plug - I was thinking about getting a new sump plug with a temp sender on it anyway so I can monitor my oil temp, so that's not awful news - new plug and washer should hopefully fix it.

but, this one looks like a bit of a bigger issue

It's definitely where the gearbox meets the crankcase....

I asked for common causes of leaks on a previous thread. Gearbox input shaft seal and flywheel seal were mentioned, among others. Given the location of the big oil drip about to fall (grey blob on the left of the pic), does it seem likely that it's one of these seals that's failed?

Despite not having much of a clue, I've done almost all of the work on the van myself thus far and I'd like to keep it going that way - the Haynes manual gives removing the gearbox a sporty sounding 3 spanner difficulty rating, which I'm game for.

As ever, any sage advice on offer for the jobs at hand is always gratefully accepted.

That looks pretty wet. I would say that the rear crank/flywheel seal is worn. Its a lot easier to drop the whole drivetrain as one unit and seperate/ reunite out in the open.
Leaving the engine in just makes it an unneccessary struggle, althought I have only done 5-speeds and syncros.
I have seen a couple of wbx camshaft bore blanking plugs that have perforated because of rust, its a full stripdown to replace so check it while the flywheel is off.
You will ideally need a large tubular drift to fit the new seal into the case and get it fitted square.

Just drop the engine get a mate to help makes it much easier. Don't forget to order the O-ring which is in the flywheel only £1 from Brickwerks. As you don't want to have to do it all over again.

You will have the 5 Torqx bolts type of flywheel....

and will need a M12 12 point. key.

5 x 10mm a/f hex socket head bolts (M12 x 1.5) not 12 point socket head ;)
