Replacement key for sliding door lock/handle

Post by fixitsteve »

Is it possible to buy a replacement key ? I have taken the handle out and see a number 9067 on the back which i assume is the key number. My other keys don't work because i think there just wrong, the lock mechanism seems to be free enough but it won't undo. I think from what i've read this is quite a common problem.

There used to be a guy called Dan Simpson who cut keys from the lock code but I think he's stopped doing it now.

I did have key cut for my replacement sliding door lock that I bought without a key but unfortunately it did not work so I resorted to removing the barrel, leaving in a bath of white spirit for a few days to remove the gunk. I then carefully removed the tabs and weenie springs and reassembled them with my ignition key in the barrel making sure that none of the tabs stand proud of the barrel. I did have to file a wee bit of one or 2.

When all went back I have 1 key that does all locks.

The only problem I encountered was removing the grub screw that holds the barrel in, as there was no slot to unscrew. I had to drill it out and make up a pin to replace it which is now glued in.

Or if you can get the lock mechanism out OK, you can swap the wafers (tumblers) around to match your ignition key. I bought the large set of wafers from VW to do just this, and in a couple of weeks I'll be selling small sets of wafers & springs to do just what you are after, ie match one lock to an existing key. I have matched all my locks to my ignition key, its very easy to do as long as you can get the cylinder part of the lock out (my sliding door lock was jammed solid) and if the lock and wafers are very old and corroded even the new wafers struggle to work. I'll be selling a set of 3 of each of the wafers and 12 springs for about £14 inc postage

Bear in mind that the handle casing generally wears first so even if you fit a new lock barrel its unlikely to be secure. Not sure how liquid metal would work to flatten the grooves you get but may work. As said, you can swap tumblers about to accept a key but don't file any down to make barrel go in flush as that actually increases the number of keys that will fit that particular lock. Casing needs to be in A1 order, then swap out unmodified tumblers to match key.
