Cant get T25 engine to run.

Im currently renovating a T25, the engine was supposedly a recon when I bought the van.

It turns over, all electrical parts have been renewed and checked, the engine has been timed to top dead centre as closely possible without specialist equipment, and it fires on ignition, has good spark from all for plugs, but just wont run. It also backfires.

The only thing that hasnt been changed is the electronic distribution block.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Some one with psychic ability may come along, but in the meantime give us a fighting chance with what engine you have....
Aircooled? Carb? injection?
Timed at TDC probably wont be close enough, hence the backfire... or you may have an air leak.

This sounds very much like HT leads in wrong order.

I find that hard to believe, new wiring loom?

the engine is a 1600 air cooled carb, with electronic dizzy 1980 model
