Sliding door looks open latch not working

Previous owner carpeted over the lock mech. There seems to be something missing for the latch to locate onto. I have nothing to compare to. Please advise. I wonder if the previous owner who carpeted over the mech removed a locator to avoid the carpet being damaged by latch???

There's a mechanism that pops down with in the lock. The last photo shows the hook that would catch the mechanism. Mines temperamental too. Remove the lock and give it all a clean and lube.
